Chapter 77
The Farroad Charter-House
also called the Charter-House
House Farroad's Highbridge trading post, wedged into the Span's caravan yard, where the house's Vale accounts and its road-debt ledger against the Wheelmoot's caravan-law are kept.
Half a shopfront and half a strongroom, the Charter-House sits between the weigh-scales and the caravan yard where the Wheelmoot's own factors haggle mule-trains through. House Farroad keeps a single clerk here year-round, whoever holds the post gets called "the Charter" after the parchment nailed behind the counter naming the house's routes and every debt owed against them. It is a small room for a house that wants to be a Great House, and the clerk knows it: every coin that crosses the counter is written twice, once for the house and once for the moot, because a Farroad factor who lets a debt go unrecorded here hands the Wheelmoot a reason to say the house still isn't ready.
