The Wayfarer's Ledger · WILDERNESS
Chapter 205
The Beaver-Flats

A wide drowned flat of standing water and root-bridges in the Greatwood's middle — dark ponds strung together into a maze of dry islands, good fishing, and an easy place to lose a pursuer or yourself.
The beavers that built the first dams are gone; their works have been flooding the floor for a generation. What's left is a tangle of half-submerged root-bridges, narrow dry hummocks, and black water that doesn't show the bottom. The Greenwake fish here and use the confusion as a natural patrol line. Prey animals drink at the margins. The Ledger's surveyors have never successfully crossed it with a sledge.
