Chapter 63

Hallie's Forge

also called the Kiln smithy

Hallie's Forge

The busiest working forge in the Kilns — ploughshares in spring, pitons and blades the rest of the year, and one long-running argument with every customer about what a fair price actually is.

Hallie Vann inherited the forge from a master who inherited it from his, and has spent the whole of her own run arguing that the old prices don't hold anymore and the new ones aren't fair either, which is somehow both true and no help to anyone standing at her counter. She turns out more rope-and-piton kits than anything else — half the town's salvors buy new iron every season, the way farmers buy new plough-blades — and takes Old Work bronze scrap in part-trade because good iron from good scrap is the one deal she never has to argue herself into.
