Chapter 161
Windcut Hold
also called the High Seat, the true Windcut
The High Moot's true seat, high in a fjord-pass above Rimeholt Landing on the Rimeward: the hold that took the name Windcut with it when the Moot drew back over the water from the old toll-hold on the mainland Rampart.
Windcut Hold sits where a fjord narrows to a pass wind-cut the same way the old mainland crossing was, which is the whole reason the name came with the Moot when it left the Rampart: the holds wanted to carry one true thing across the water, not build a new one from nothing. Longhalls of dark timber and undressed stone step up the pass on both sides, roofed steep against the snow-load, with the moot-hall itself set at the narrowest throat where every hold's elder can be heard without a horn. Brunda Pass-Keeper speaks first here as she does at every gathering, but the hold answers as one people or not at all. A lowland captain who wants Korl backs sends word up from Rimeholt Landing and waits for the moot-hall's answer, and no single hold-elder can sell what the gathered holds haven't weighed. The dead are kept apart, at the barrow above the upper terrace, and every hold in the fjord watches that ground the way it watches the pass itself.
