Chapter 250
The Farshield
also called the Sunken Rampart, the risen wall
The Stoneborn homeland — a montane continent north-west across the sea, where the Northern Rampart's strike-line dives under the water and heaves up again as a shield-wall ridge. One stone with the Rampart, sundered by the sea.
The Stoneborn always said the Rampart did not end where the sea took it, only where the eye did, and the Farshield proves them right: the same granite strike-line runs out under the water north-west of the Vale and rises again as a long shield-wall of ridge and moor, a montane continent an isthmus wide at its waist. The Stonewright Moot has moved its deep galleries here, cutting the risen stone as their forebears cut the drowned half. On the Farshield's far western shore the ranges fall to a horizon of open water past which nothing settled has ever reported back — it is the coast where the oldest question, of the Imperial heartland somewhere across the inland sea, is felt most and answered least. A Stoneborn will tell you the stone is the same on both sides of the water and let the rest stay a question.
