The Wayfarer's Ledger · SETTLEMENT
Chapter 157
The Last Waystead
also called the milestone hamlet, where the road thought it ended
The milestone hamlet on the southern flats where the old Farroad Waystead stood before House Farroad moved its caravan-gate down to the Silkstrand. A few walls, a deep well, and the mile-stone that marks where the road once thought it ended.
When House Farroad moved its gate down to the Silkstrand shore, it did not tear down the yards it grew up in — it left the Last Waystead, a milestone hamlet on the southern flats where the old kept road once thought it had run out of world. The deep well still draws, a handful of drover families still hold the walls, and the ferry road that now carries on toward the salt shore passes the old mile-stone that used to be the last one. The Wheelmoot keeps it on the circuit as a watered stop, and the drovers keep the story of the season the Waystead never closed its gates. It is small and honest and exactly as far south as the mainland roads used to reach.
