Chapter 131
The Southern Flats
Sun-cracked chaparral flats south of the Vale ring, worked by salt-caravans out of Saltreach Spring and picked over by the smugglers and mercenary drop-outs who ride the same roads.
The Flats are a working country before they are a dangerous one: caravan roads lace the chaparral between Saltreach Spring and the coast, and the Silt Hands move contraband along the same ruts the honest traders cut. What danger there is rides in on two feet — the Broken Lances, mutineers out of the Marrow Lances' contracts, take what an unescorted wagon can't defend. The main company has never let that go: Marrow Lances riders work the Flats on standing escort contracts, in part to keep the road open for Saltreach Spring's caravans and in part because every Broken Lance still wearing a company cloak is a debt the Marrowhall means to collect in person.
