Chapter 43
The Slack-Tide Stones

A ring of pre-Sundering standing stones on a mudflat, exposed only at the lowest tide; the Kneeling Drowned read the water's moods here in the salt-marks the tide leaves behind.
The stones stand just below the average waterline — a pre-Sundering circle only the deepest ebb reveals, crusted with salt and barnacle on their lower halves. When the tide pulls back far enough, the Kneeling Drowned wade out to read the salt-lines and weed-marks the water leaves in the stone. The reading is quiet work, and the marks do not always say the same thing twice.
