Chapter 141
Gallowgate Quay
also called the Waist quay
The Stoneborn port at the Farshield's isthmus waist, where the shield-wall pinches narrow between two seas. The dressed-stone harbor the Stonewright Moot ships worked stone and iron out of.
Where the Farshield narrows to an isthmus a few hundred metres wide, the Stonewright Moot cut Gallowgate Quay — a harbor of fitted granite blocks with a gate-arch of the same, so a ship passes under worked stone to reach worked stone. It is the continent's one real port, chosen because the waist lets a cargo road cross from the galleries to the water without climbing the shield-wall. Dressed stone, forged iron, and the Moot's ledgered debts move through here; the ferry from the mainland's Gull's Watch makes landfall at the quay. Everything about it is built true and built to outlast the season, which is the only compliment a Stoneborn pays a place.
