Sela, the Ringing Child
aka the Ringing Child, the Echo-Touched Girl
A farm-girl of the eastern Vale, eight winters old, who has begun — impossibly, for a human child — to see the Design: to read the world as a made thing and draw the maker's unfinished sign no one taught her. The eastern folk have only the old word for a touched child, and call her the Ringing Child; what she actually does has nothing to do with sound, and is far worse than they know.
Sela Othrenni was an ordinary herd-child until the winter morning she woke and began to draw. Not pictures — a diagram: the same shape over and over, in hearth-ash and spilled flour and scratched dirt, a clean cold design with one line always left undrawn, as though her small hand knew the whole of it and knew, too, that to close the last line would be to finish something that must not be finished. She had never seen it. No one had. It is Athra's sign — the mark of the Vyr's making-god, that no human eye is built to hold — and it has surfaced in the hands of a herd-girl who cannot read. She arranges her toys and the crockery into little working mechanisms a child should not conceive; she looks at the broken barn-hinge and says, plainly, where it wants to be mended; when she sleeps her hands go on drawing in the air. The farm calls it ringing because ringing is the only word the eastern Vale has for a child gone wrong, and because when she is deep in it the milk sours and the dog will not come in and the whole steading feels the way a room feels before weather. But she does not hum. She builds. She has begun, at eight, to see the Design — and only the Vyr are born seeing the Design. Which is the thing that must never be said over her cradle, because there is no innocent way for it to be true. Athra hands its designs to a chosen few and only ever to the Vyr; a human child reading the world as a made thing means the making has slipped its banks — that the sky's long labor on the Fair Copy has begun, faintly, to leak downhill into the living young of the very world it means to erase. She is not a monster and not a draft. She is a symptom, the first small wrongness of a thing being remade around her, and the pity of it is that everyone who loves her is right to fear the ringing and wrong about every reason. Her mother hides her under the Soft Choir's wing, and the soft-hearted keep her out of plain mercy, seeing only a frightened touched girl. The hard heads want her studied. And once — this is the part the mother will not repeat — a pale Vale-Vyr scholar passing through the eastern steadings stopped dead at the sight of her ash-drawing, went the color of tallow, and left before dawn without a word, which the farm took for one more rudeness of the sky-folk and which was in fact the only person for a hundred miles who understood exactly what he was looking at. Sela herself has asked only one thing, of anyone who will kneel to her height: whether the drawing will stop, and whether it will hurt when it does. No one has told her the truth, which is that nobody knows, and that the few who could guess are praying it does.
