PERSONAE · THE VALE
Orin Pell
aka the quartermaster, Pell
The Redhook crew's quartermaster, who runs the hold's cheap fence-market and has fallen out hard with Vera over who is skimming whom — the split that trapped the hideaway's own passages.
Orin Pell keeps the books and moves the goods, and a quartermaster who counts for a living eventually counts what the chief keeps back. He decided Vera hoards the best shares in her deep chamber and refuses to move them cheap while the crew goes thin, so he set up his own market in the near galleries — salvage priced to shift, coin coming in — and told anyone who'd listen that Vera had gone greedy and soft. Vera called it theft and walled off the passage between them. Now the two halves of the crew trap each other's runs and hide their takings, and Pell writes his side of it into a counter-tally he is not shy about: for a buyer with the right coin, he would hand over exactly where Vera's share-hole is dug. He is not brave enough to move on her himself. He is bitter enough to sell her out.
