PERSONAE · THE VALE
Adept Corren
aka the surveyor who ran
The Listening College surveyor sent to map the Sunken Resonance — who mapped two galleries in a careful hand, read a living name struck into the crystal, and fled, leaving camp and ledger where they stood.
Corren came up as a mapper, not a Deep Listener — patient, methodical, the kind the College trusts with a floor plan because they will not touch what they are measuring. They took the vault commission because a working census-engine is the cleanest old-work echo in the Vale and mapping it was, on paper, the safest way to be near it. Two galleries in, careful notes and all, they read a correction that named a man alive in Valenfeld today, with a date of closure beside his name, and understood in one cold moment that the engine was no longer counting backward over the dead but forward over the living. The ledger's last legible line is not a fact but a realization — 'It is not recording. It is scheduling.' — and then the hand fails. Corren left the brazier lit and the bedroll unrolled and did not stop until they were back in the light. They will not go down again, and they have not told Sevenn everything, because some of what they read had a date on it and the dates are close.
