PERSONAE · THE VALE

Edda Vossk

An Old Lances outrider held in Hewngate's undercroft — Sevrin Vossk's niece, taken because the old guard pay best for their own, and the reason a retaking is coming.

Edda rode escort the day Hewngate's gate went up as a chain, and she has been in the undercroft since, because Bron Coldhand knows exactly whose blood she carries. She has not given him the satisfaction of breaking; she keeps a tally of the garrison's watches scratched in the mortar, in case anyone honest ever comes down the stair. She would rather be cut free than bought free — to Edda the difference is the whole of the oath — but she will take either, and she will remember which.

greetingQuiet — keep your voice down. You don't walk like one of Bron's men; nobody's paid you yet. Edda Vossk, Old Lances, out of Highbridge. They took me to make my uncle bid against his own company — the cowards know the old guard pay best for their own. If Sevrin sent you, then he chose the keep over me. ...Good. He should. Get the muster-horn and the ledger off Coldhand's wall. That's worth more than I am.
grant_sayHere — I lifted this off a guard the last time they hauled me up for the bidding. Take it; I'd only get myself killed swinging it. Bron keeps the horn nailed in the toll-hall and the ransom-roll with his clerk. Get them up the stair.

topics{"bron":"Bron Coldhand. He doesn't rage — that's the frightening part. He runs men like inventory and hangs the ones who don't tally. He nailed our muster-horn to his wall the day he took the toll, to remind the company he'd bought it. Take it down. It will mean something to the men who still keep their oath.","the horn":"The Bought Oath-Horn — our muster-call. A true hand can still rally the company with it; in Bron's it only collects a chain-toll. It's nailed in the toll-hall over his own chest. My uncle wants it back more than he wants me, and he's right to.","the ledger":"The ransom-roll — every name on the chain and the price Bron set, kept in a fair clerk's hand. But read it close and you'll find the line where Vandahl's coin became the Lances' wage. That's the proof Sevrin's really after: the keep was bought before it was taken.","escape":"Don't worry over me. Once the toll-hall's quiet I can climb the gatehouse stair on my own — it's the cells that hold me, not the climb. You make your noise up top; I'll be a half-mile down the road before Bron finishes counting his men. Get the brass and go."}
