Tobb Verrin — human render

PERSONAE · THE VALE

Tobb Verrin

aka the Undertaker of the Dig, Verrin who went east

The Finder dig-lead who took a crew into the one barrow the whole Vale agreed should stay shut, broke the outer seals for the imperial stone and whatever the cold room held, and got exactly far enough to understand his mistake before the barrow made a keeper of him.

Tobb Verrin was a good Finder, which is to say he was careful, paid his crew, and did not believe in ghosts — the professional skepticism that lets a man make a living opening other people's graves. He read the barrow the way he read every job: a sealed threshold means someone thought there was something worth sealing, and Verrin was in the business of the second opinion. He was not greedy so much as thorough, and thoroughness took him past the third seal, and the fourth, and down the oath-stair into galleries no chisel had touched in four centuries, keeping a survey log the whole way because a Finder documents. The log is how we know he understood, near the end, that every wall he took down was a wall a wiser man had put up — and gave the order to turn back one day too late. He did not come up. His crew did not come up. The barrow does not waste a breach: the dead who die on watch here join the watch, and Verrin, who spent his life opening the graves of others, keeps one now, walled in the inward-facing ring beside keepers four hundred years his elder, taking his orders from the First Keeper in a voice that used to price lintel-stone.

voice_notesIn the survey log: dry, practical, joking to keep the crew steady — until the register breaks. As one of the kept dead: the old professional cadence surfacing wrong, pricing and measuring the intruder the way he once priced stone.
secretsTwo of his crew walked out in the night before the end and lived; they are somewhere in the Vale, and they have never told anyone where they were or why they will not go east.
