Berru has held the gate contract for two seasons — longer than any other Marrow captain would stomach on Vandahl's late-pay schedule, which makes her either the most loyal or the most calculating. The truth is both: she owes a debt to Sevrin Vossk's company and she is methodical about not dying while she pays it. Three of her twelve Lances have been slipping out at odd hours; two came back with new boots. Berru has done the arithmetic. She cannot accuse without proof, and she cannot watch all three at once. She will pay in honest coin, which is more than Vandahl is doing.
