PERSONAE · THE NORTHERN REACH
The First of the Drowned
The Stillwater Order's oldest cautionary tale, still present — a master who tried to close another soul's ending himself and never fully came back, lingering at the bottom of the still tarn.
Once the Order's finest, the First believed he could finish a stranger's unfinished ending on his own — reach into the space a death had left open and close it clean, rather than wait on the water to keep it. He walked into the tarn to do it, and what surfaced was neither dead nor living nor quite gone — held, the monks now believe, in the same patient keeping that takes the drowned and the flooded, wherever that keeping starts. The monks neither speak to the thing under the mirror-flat water nor speak of it, except as a warning. Master Oén has spent his life studying the First the way a man studies his own possible death, and now, dying, he understands the First's silence better than he would like.
