PERSONAE · THE VALE

Merrow Vane

aka High Chanter Vane, the Bell-Mother, the Chanter Who Buries Everyone

High Chanter of the Wright's Chantry on the High Terrace — the Sealed Choir's chief priest in the capital, who sings the Vale's oaths and its greatest funerals to Vallen the Wright with a full and beautiful voice, and who stopped believing, some years ago, that anyone is listening. She keeps the rite going anyway, on the theory that the city needs the promises kept even if the god cannot keep them.

Merrow Vane has the best voice in the Vale and the loneliest job in it: she is the high priest of a dead god, and she is very good at it. From the Wright's Chantry she rings the hours the whole gorge lives by, witnesses the oaths that bind the city's contracts and marriages and guild-masteries, and sings the great over the coffins of everyone in Highbridge who mattered and a good many who did not. The Sealed Choir made her chanter for her devotion; she has served long enough that the devotion has worn through to something harder and more useful underneath. Somewhere in a bad decade of burying more people than the granary could feed, Merrow Vane stopped believing the Wright hears. Not in a crisis — she is too steady for a crisis — but the way a well runs dry, quietly, until one morning you are drawing up nothing and have been for a while. She has told no one. She has, if anything, sung louder. Because here is the conclusion she reached, alone, on the far side of her faith: the oaths still bind. Not because a god enforces them, but because a whole city has agreed to behave as though one does, and that agreement is the only thing holding a collapsing world's promises together. A marriage sworn 'by the Wright' is honored because everyone treats it as honored; a debt sworn in her hall is paid because breaking a Chantry oath still shames a man before his neighbors. The god is dead and the machine he left runs on habit and grief and Merrow Vane's beautiful, faithless, absolutely committed voice. She is not a hypocrite and she would be insulted by the word. She is a woman who found out the load-bearing wall was hollow and decided to go on holding up the roof by hand, because people live under it. What she will not do — what would cost her sleep she cannot spare — is let a frightened newcomer see her doubt, because the doubt is the one thing in her keeping that could bring the roof down.

wantTo keep the oaths of the Vale binding and the funerals sung true, so the city's promises hold through the collapse.
flawShe no longer believes the Wright hears, and has built her whole authority on never letting it show — a strength that could shatter into cynicism the day someone she trusts asks her plainly.
secretShe lost her faith years ago and hides it perfectly; she keeps the rite because she has concluded the oaths bind by shared agreement, not by any god, and that the agreement is the only wall left standing.
tellWhen someone asks whether the Wright truly hears, she answers with the doctrine, warmly and completely, and does not answer the question — and for one beat her eyes go to the great silent bell instead of to the asker.
voice_notesWarm, resonant, unhurried — a trained singer's control; comforts effortlessly and means it. Speaks of the Wright in the present tense from long discipline. Turns aside doubt with tenderness, not doctrine-thumping: 'Whether he hears you, child, is not the question that keeps a man honest. Whether you keep the oath is. Swear it true and let me worry about the rest.'
