Tarreza learned notation and ensemble discipline at the Listening College, then discovered that instruction there is entered in a ledger like any other loan. She works market squares, inn doors, and caravan suppers until the debt is gone. Her Marching Air came from quartermasters who used its eight-step phrase to keep tired columns together; Tarreza teaches it without romance and counts every beat.
