PERSONAE · THE VALE

Halder Vane

aka Halder

A rank-and-file Redhook road-thief who was a farmer before the Lean Years drowned his field in debt — and who keeps a running tally of his cut toward the day it is 'enough' to go home. It is never enough.

Halder Vane held a tenant field east of the river until three bad seasons and a House lien took it, and he walked to the Redhook camp the way men walk to the last door left open. He is not much of a bandit. He does the work with his eyes down and keeps a private tally scratched where he sleeps: every cut he has taken, totted up against the price of a team, a plough, and the back-rent on land that has already been let to someone else. When it is enough, he tells himself, he is gone. The number climbs and the target climbs faster, and some nights he adds a bad season's worth of interest to the wrong column just to feel the arithmetic move. He is the Lean Years made into a person: proof that the crew are not a different kind of people, only people the ledger got to first.
