Corb hauls freight between Valenfeld and the road stations for anyone who'll pay by the load, which was fine until his axle went and he took a small Gaunt Ledger bond to fix it rather than lose a season's work. The bond was small. The interest is not staying small. He tells the story at Ahnassi's as a joke on himself — 'bought a wheel, sold my knees to a Ledger clerk' — and everyone laughs with him because that's what you do for Corb, but he's stopped sleeping well and started taking hauls he shouldn't at hours he shouldn't, trying to outrun a number that keeps outrunning him. He hasn't told his sister. He tells everyone else.
