THE POWERS · THE NORTHERN REACH
The Drowned
The Stillwater Order's heresy and warning — monks who used the empty hand to get close to old Imperium power, then reached for it, and were lost.
The Stillwater Stance lets a monk stand untouched in the pull of old Imperium power, and that is precisely the temptation: who better to take up a dead god's leavings than one who cannot be moved by them? The answer, every time, is no one — because to reach for that power you must want it, and wanting is the one thing the discipline forbids. Those who try become the Drowned: monks who walked into the still tarn looking for the old power they were taught to leave behind, and did not come out the same. The First of them is still down there, in a manner of speaking.
