Pell Varsk

A green Marrow Lances recruit in the Guildrows, terrified of his first contract, who writes letters home every night and has sent none of them.

Pell signed with the Lances because a mercenary company pays more reliably than his family's failing field ever did, and he has not stopped being scared of that decision since. He writes his mother a letter most nights — how the training's going, how the food is, never a word about the actual danger — and folds each one into a growing stack under his bunk instead of sending it, telling himself he'll send the whole batch once he's survived his first real contract and has something worth telling. Dask has a coin on him lasting the season. Pell doesn't know that, which is probably for the best.
