Chapter 109

Sevda Ash-Tongue

also called the Unmade Singer

Sevda Ash-Tongue

A gravesinger the Bonesung unmade for singing a barrow open instead of shut, now the voice of the Cinder Quorum — the diggers who work the ash-sealed barrow the tribes will not name. She tells herself the older dead are no one's to protect, and is no longer sure she believes it.

Sevda learned the same prophecy Nali Gravesinger keeps, and the same rites — how to sing a barrow's dead down and its mouth shut. Then she sang one open, for reasons the camp never accepted, and the Ash-Father unmade her: no name in the songs, no ancestor-pole, no tribe. The Cinder Quorum took her in because a crew that breaks barrows for the Gaunt Ledger has obvious use for someone who knows which dead will rise and which will let you pass. Her argument is lawyerly and she has worn it smooth: the gravesinger's prophecy covers only the Unclosed, so the older dead beneath them are no one's to forbid. But the Quorum's last dig into the elder-dead vault came back two diggers short and one wearing the Unnamed Mask and not speaking, and Sevda has started singing under her breath the rite she was unmade for — the one that sings a barrow shut.
