The Gaunt Ledger's debt-hold clerk in the Underbridge — keeps immaculate books on other people's misery, and works late making sure the misery stays manageable.

Morel isn't a debt-collector; he's the clerk who files the loans so precisely that the Ledger's rougher collectors have less excuse to get involved. He knows exactly which debtors are one bad week from the night-half of the business finding them, and he quietly reworks their schedules before that happens, on his own time, without telling anyone upstairs. It costs him nothing the Ledger would notice and it's the only part of the job he's ever been proud of. He'd rather be at the Lame Ox than at his desk, most nights, and stays at the desk anyway.
