Durgal has run the Weeping Adit for eleven years and watched it go from the house's best seam to its last one to, this spring, its wettest problem. He's shored the lowest gallery with green timber because that's what he has, sent three requests up to Vandahl Keep for Stoneborn-grade props and proper pumps, and gotten back two letters about the house's confidence in his stewardship and no coin. He is not a dramatic man. He measures the water level with a chalk mark every morning, says nothing when it's higher, and keeps his crew out of the lowest gallery on the days it worries him, which is most days now. He'd take a hand from anyone willing to go down and see how bad it really is before he has to tell the Lord-Holder the seam is lost — a report he has been putting off for a month because he knows exactly what a lost seam means for House Vandahl's already-thin garrison pay.
