Chapter 111
Sexton Orlaith Cindergrave
also called Sexton Orlaith
The great chantry's sexton on the High Terrace — keeps the votive lamps lit on candle-stubs nobody's supposed to reuse, and quietly runs the closest thing the terrace has to a soup line.
Orlaith is meant to tend the lamps and sweep the nave, and does both, but the job that actually eats her day is the one nobody assigned her: melting down the guttered stub-ends the wealthier worshippers leave behind and re-pouring them into whole candles for the families who can't afford their own, then doing the same with the leftover blessing-bread. She swears the Wright never minded a re-poured candle, since he's not around to complain either way, and says it with a grin that gets her in mild trouble with the stricter Binders. Ask her about the Writ-House queue outside and she'll tell you exactly which magistrate is having a bad week, because everyone confesses to a sexton eventually, even the ones stamping tolls.
