Chapter 44
Fitz Orrin
Stokes the Kilns' forge-fires for Hallie Vann, and spends every spare minute dreaming of being the one who finally hauls up a real Old Work relic instead of just watching Quennit weigh other people's.
Fitz is twelve and has never dug a vault in his life, but he's read every salvor's boast that's ever crossed Quennit's yard and has a whole private theory, revised weekly, about where the next big find will turn up. Hallie keeps him stoking kilns and running errands, which he does well and complains about constantly, because the alternative — actually apprenticing into the trade full-time — would mean giving up the dream that he might get to be a salvor himself someday, and admitting he's just a kiln-boy is worse than any amount of shoveling coal.
