Chapter 62
Kessa Bellringer
also called the Apostate of the Hush
The Bellwakes' founder — a Mourner of the Hush who broke her order's rule against unsealing what's shut, and now leads a crew ringing open the bells the Mourners spent lifetimes keeping quiet.
Kessa kept the Hush for nineteen years: latched the barrow-doors, closed the dead's eyes, never once let a grieving word go unsaid before the rite was finished. Then her own brother faded mid-sentence, his last word cut off by a closing rite performed exactly on schedule and a breath too soon — and she decided a Hush that swallows even goodbyes is not mercy but theft. She took a striker to the Hushing Deep's great bell — not to open anything buried, but to call every soul within earshot to come say what they needed to say before she'd shut a door again. The Mourners call her an apostate for slowing the rite; the ones who trade in what the deep still holds call her useful and keep her in good rope and better strikers. Kessa calls herself, simply, the one who waits long enough to hear the whole sentence.
