A Hessk diver working the flooded understructure under the Span for salvage and deep-lungs — deadpan about the drowned things she's found down there, and honestly more afraid of the paperwork than the water.

Sela works the footings the way a farmer works a field, methodically, every season. She's found bones, coin, the occasional Old Work fragment, and once a whole intact door standing upright in silt that led nowhere anyone could find twice. She tells that story completely flat, the same way she tells everything, and it's precisely the flatness that makes people believe her. What actually rattles her is the Writ-House's salvage-tax forms, which she considers a genuinely more hostile environment than the water.
