The Vigil Oath

aka the Lamp-Sworn's oath, the plain oath

The short oath every Vigil-Knight swears on taking up a lamp — older than the Sealed Choir's whole institution, and unchanged, as far as anyone can tell, since before anyone thought to write it down.

I did not make the Light and I will not pretend to own it. I will keep it lit while it is mine to keep. I will feed the traveler before I ask their god. I will stand the bad road so someone else does not have to. When my hands give out, I will have taught another pair to hold the lamp, and if I have not, that failure is mine and not the Light's. This I swear on the only witness that has never once failed to answer a true oath — whatever it is, and however long it has left to burn.
