The Hewngate Cut
aka the fence agreement, the Lances' cut
The one paper both halves of the split crew still honor: the running fence-agreement that moves Redhook salvage on through Hewngate for the Broken Lances' cut. The road out of the Vale, on the record.
Terms as they stand, so no runner claims he didn't know them. Everything the Vale road gives us that's too hot or too heavy to move here goes ON, up the castle road to Hewngate, and the Broken pay us out clean and quiet at their toll-gate. Their cut is a third off the top. It was a quarter when we started. Don't argue it with the sergeant there; he doesn't argue, he weighs. House marks get filed off before they leave our hold. No names, no ledgers travel with the goods — the Broken made that plain, and after what they are, we don't cross them on it. Whatever they're really running out of Hewngate is their business and I've told the crew twice to stop asking. We give them our overflow, they give us coin and a road the watch can't close. That's the whole of it. Vera and Pell can murder each other over the near shares for all I care. This agreement outlives both of them. It's the only thing keeping the crew off the gallows, and the Broken know it. — kept for the runners
