The Pit-Levy Wage Ledger
aka the unpaid roll, Vandahl pit-muster accounts
A House Vandahl paymaster's ledger for the lower-gallery levy: a full company's wages entered, owed, and never paid out — Sergeant Coll Harrow's own name among the unpaid.
PIT-LEVY, LOWER GALLERY — WAGES OWING, by order of the House. Entered against the season, to be paid on relief: Harrow, C. — serjeant — 3 crowns, 2 marks — UNPAID Tolm, D. — pick — 1 crown — UNPAID Beck, R. — pick — 1 crown — UNPAID Sarn, the younger — timberman — 1 crown, 4 marks — UNPAID ...and eleven and twenty more, every line struck 'unpaid'. Marginal hand, later, smaller: "Relief requested, spring. Denied — no silver. Requested again, summer. No answer. The men ask when they are dismissed. I have no order to give them. — C.H." Last hand, the ink gone brown: "Water at the second prop. The House will settle its accounts, they say. It has not. We hold. What else is there to do — we were never told to stop."
