The Ashline Poles

aka the ash markers

A line of Asheni ancestor-poles east of the Eastern Hills marking where the settled ridge ends and the open ash of the Bonesung's country begins.

The poles start thin and grow thick the farther east you walk. One pole means you can still see the ridge behind you. A dozen means you can't, and the ash has gone soft enough to swallow a wheel. The Ashari who plant them don't do it for outlanders, but they don't pull them up either. Past the last pole the road stops being a road at all, and whatever moves out there moves faster than anything on the ridge you just left.
