The Quiet

The Finders' initiation pamphlet — cant, code, and a glossary that never quite closes, written to tell an outsider nothing at all.

Rules of Address Never say a name inside four walls you don't own. Say the hand, or say nothing. The one who holds the ledger is called the Ledger, never by any name they had before. A job is a walk. A door already been through is a chalked door — mind the chalk before you touch the latch, or you'll be working a house someone else already opened, and they will not thank you for it. A mark is a friend of the house. Speak of a friend of the house the way you'd speak in front of them, because sooner or later you will be. What You Owe A Finder delivers. Not delivers well, not delivers eventually — delivers. What you were sent for is what comes back, whole, on the night you said it would. A Finder who cannot deliver says so before the walk, not after. Saying so after is the same as not delivering at all. Owe the Quiet what you'd owe a rope another Finder is holding for you over a drop you can't see the bottom of. That is to say, everything, and don't look down to check. What You Never Say Why. The Writ trades in why. Motive is the one thing that survives being repeated, dressed up, and sworn to at a hearing. A Finder gives a name, a night, and a take, and stops there. Anyone asking for more than that from you is doing the Writ's work, whether or not they wear the coat. Never say another Finder's take out loud where it can be overheard by anyone not owed a share of it. A number remembered is a number that can be sworn to. Never say sorry to the Ledger. Say when. A Short Glossary, for Those Who Already Know What It Means THE LEDGER — what the Quiet answers to. THE QUIET — what the Ledger never says aloud. A DEBT — what standing costs. STANDING — what a debt buys back, in time. THE WRIT — the ones who ask the questions the Quiet doesn't answer. QUESTIONS THE QUIET DOESN'T ANSWER — the Writ's business. Not yours. HOLDING — owing nothing and being owed nothing, which is to say, a state you are never actually in. CLEAR — what holding is called by someone who hasn't checked lately. Learn these in order and you will find you've learned nothing, which is correct. This glossary was never written for you. It was written for whoever reads it over your shoulder and stops at the second line, certain they very nearly had it. The last rule, and the only one written plain: deliver, or the Quiet delivers you.
