The Hewngate Toll-Writ

aka Coldhand's toll-board, the honest price

The board Bron Coldhand nailed over the toll-hall's old Vandahl heraldry: a plain schedule of prices for passing the chain, written in a fair clerk's hand, as if a seized road were a lawful gate.

POSTED AT HEWNGATE, BY ORDER OF THE HOUSE OF THE CHAIN. The gate is open to any who settle at it. The prices are honest, which is more than the last men to hold this hall could say. Foot, single — 4 marks. Cart, laden — 1 crown the axle. Escort, armed — declare your steel at the chain, or lose it. Those who cannot pay — held, and their people written to. The roll is kept fair; ask the clerk. Lower, in the captain's own hand, cut deeper than the rest: "A toll is not a robbery. A robbery pretends it will not come again. We come again, on a schedule, at a fair rate, and we do not lie about the sword. That is the only honest gate on this road." Where the House of Vandahl's grey tower was painted on the plaster above, someone has hung the board to cover all but the topmost stone.
