The Last Course — the line they scratched before they gave up walling
On the innermost wall, where the keepers ran out of stone and out of years, one of them scratched a single line before the walling stopped for good. It is the deepest thing written in the barrow, and the shortest, and it is the answer the whole descent has been circling — the one the demo does not let you open.
[This is not cut. It is SCRATCHED, fast and shallow, into the last raised course of the innermost wall — the wall past which the stone simply stops, unfinished, as if the hands that built it were interrupted and never came back. The letters waver. Whoever made them was not steady.] IT IS SMALLER THAN THE SEAT IT CAME FROM. WE KEEP EXPECTING IT TO BE BIGGER. IT IS SMALLER. AND IT IS ENOUGH. [Below it, a second hand, later, calmer, the ash worked carefully into the scratches to preserve them:] We leave this line unwalled on purpose. Every keeper who comes to relieve the watch reads it first, and it does the work a hundred courses of stone could not: it tells him the truth of the thing before he sees it. That it is a chip. A wedge. A splinter you could close your fist around. That a man will stand in front of it and think, all of that walling, all those dead, for THIS — and reach for it, because it is small, and small things are for taking. And then he will remember that it is small the way the crack that drops a bridge is small. That the god it came from was not small. That everything the Vale calls Old Work — every bronze wonder, every device a smith cannot copy — is men trying and failing to make something a fraction as true as this splinter, which was not made at all, but broken off the thing that made making. Do not take it because it is small. That is the exact thought it is waiting for. The barrow does not open here. Not for you, not today. Read the line, understand the size of the small thing, and climb back up into the wind, and let the door stay held. [There is nothing written past this. The wall ends. The cold begins.]
