The Continents Did Not Arrive

A skeptical Vale scholar's pamphlet arguing that the Rimeward, Farshield, and Silkstrand predate their appearance on respectable maps, which proves chiefly that respectable mapmakers stayed home.

A Pamphlet Concerning Three Allegedly New Continents, Addressed to the Cartographic Faculty The Rimeward has lately appeared on our revised maps. The Korl, who have buried their dead across its water for longer than our harbor has kept soundings, received this geographical event without surprise. The Farshield has also appeared. Stoneborn quarry speech has long held that the Northern Rampart continues beneath the sea and rises beyond it. This was dismissed as a mason's proverb until a surveyor saw the ridge, whereupon it became a discovery and acquired a scale bar. Last comes the Silkstrand, source of the salt and silk named in two centuries of toll books. Several learned maps formerly showed those goods entering the southern road from a tasteful blank. We must now accept that salt has a country of origin and does not condense inside customs houses. I propose the modest view that these lands were always present. Our maps were wrong. A map is a record of where a paid person went, what that person could see, and which errors survived copying. It is not a writ ordering the coast to exist only inside the ink. The common objections are weak. "No ship reported them" means no report reached the archive. Sailors report to owners, kin, creditors, and taverns before they report to scholars. "The old imperial chart ends at the outer soundings" means the chart ends there. The sea does not. "Their shores differ from our inherited scheme" is an objection to the scheme. Let the faculty amend its language. We did not find three continents. We corrected three omissions after the people who lived upon them, traded from them, and crossed to them had exhausted every gentler method of informing us. I recommend humility, fresh ink, and travel money for the next survey. Of these, fresh ink will be approved.
