The Cold Ford Log
Sergeant Veld's duty log from Karth Bridge — a record of stalker sightings, road conditions, traveller counts, and a dwindling column for 'relief expected' that stopped being filled in seven months ago.
A weathered field book, entries in the same spare hand as Veld's letter. Most entries note the weather, the state of the ford stones, and whether the stalkers came down to the road. One entry per week ends with the same phrase: 'No relief.' The final fourteen entries end with nothing at all. A codicil at the back, undated: a rough census of travellers passed north, a rough estimate of how many returned, and the difference between those numbers written in large figures and underlined twice.
