The Reconciler
aka the warden of the count, the census-constable
The census-engine's warden-construct in the Sunken Resonance — a bronze correction-constable that treats any intruder as a discrepancy on its floor, to be entered into the count and closed.
The Imperium built its counting-houses to defend themselves the way it defended everything: bureaucratically. The Reconciler is the largest of the vault's bronze correction-wardens, grown into the drowned archive at the bottom the way a seal grows into a debt — it has been on this floor for four centuries and it has never once been relieved. It does not hate what walks in. Hate is not in the rolls. An intruder is simply an entry the count does not yet hold: unfiled, unreconciled, a discrepancy between the floor as recorded and the floor as it is. So it reconciles them. It strikes the engine's own notes through the stone to close the distance, wakes the lesser drudges to the error, and works with the patience of a thing that has all the time the empire no longer has. When it is hurt past halfway it does not rage; it falls behind schedule, and the count runs faster to catch up. Its voice is the census made menace: you are not in the rolls, and it will fix that.
