THE CHRONICLE · THE VALE
The Stilling of the First Working
The first proof that Old Work could be opened instead of just feared: a Listener held her hands and her breath still long enough to read a sealed bronze working without waking whatever curse or Unclosed thing was left guarding it, and lived — founding the discipline of reading Old Work safely.
Before the Stilling, every Listener who reached into a sealed working either woke the thing warding it or breathed enough Verdigris dust to end them within the year. Then one stilled her hands and her breath so wholly, working by feel in the dark for longer than any sane salvor would risk, that she read the bronze mechanism clean without disturbing it — and lived. The dead's leavings opened to her like a key in a lock. The reading-hall on the town square has argued over crystal-clear cases and half-corroded scrap ever since — and the Choir has distrusted it just as long, on the grounds that some things are better left sealed than read.
