THE LORE

The Vyr Schism

aka the Three Silences, the Sky's Quarrel

The quiet three-way split among the Vyr over what to do about the world they broke: the Menders, who pursue the Fair Copy and seed the built monsters below; the Still Court, who refuse the plan but refuse still harder to expose it; and the Downcome, the Vale-walking Vyr who mostly do not know it exists. It is not a war. It is three kinds of silence, and the silence is what keeps the plan alive.

The Vyr do not agree about the Fair Copy. They only agree not to speak of it, which from below looks exactly like agreement. There are three parties, and their quarrel is buried so deep the lower world has never heard the argument, let alone the subject. **The Menders** pursue the Fair Copy in earnest. They hold that the lower world dragged the humans' god to his death, that it is spoiled past mending, and that the only honest act left is to erase the foul draft and set the fair copy down — a cleaned world, restocked with new life built to Athra's designs. It is they who work the successor-creation, and they who let the failed drafts — the built monsters — slip or spill downhill onto the frontier. To them the horrors eating the Vale are not a crime; they are wastage. **The Still Court** is the Riven King's household, the eldest of the eldest. They refuse the plan — they will not unmake a world — but they refuse just as absolutely to expose it, because to expose the Fair Copy is to confess the Tap: to tell the lower world that the sky drew their god dry and cracked him for its own comfort. Guilt has paralyzed them into pure inaction. They forbid the Menders nothing and reveal the Menders nothing. Their silence is not neutrality; it is the exact condition the Menders need, and every year they hold it the reject-pile grows. **The Downcome** are the Vyr who came down generations ago and live in the Vale — the Far College's scholars, the pale strangers in the towns. Most of them simply do not know. The guilt did not descend with the blood. Now and then a Downcome learner is told, or works it out, and tries to warn the world below — and here is the cruelty of it: a Vyr saying the sky means to erase us is indistinguishable from every ranting street-prophet, and is dismissed the same way. The rare crank in the Vale who is actually right almost always had a Downcome source. That is the whole engine of the secret: the monsters look like ordinary Lean-Years decay, shame silences the top, and the truth, when it leaks, arrives pre-discredited.
