House Vandahl's ancestral custom of interring its dead by bloodline rank — the highest goes deepest, the most powerful most sealed — which ensures that those who ring the longest are also the hardest to reach and the most likely to walk.
The rule is simple: a Vandahl is buried as far from the living as their rank deserves. A hireling in the upper crypts, a housecarl mid-niche, the heirs and lords at the bottom of the deepest undercroft. The idea was that depth equals honour.
