THE LORE · THE SOUTHERN FLATS

The Lying Water

The heat-mirage phenomenon of the Southern Flats — the salt pan shimmers with the appearance of standing water that is never there, a perceptual trap that kills by leading the thirsty toward the illusion instead of the shade.

The Reshi call it the Liar and use it as a navigation tool, knowing its patterns. The Ashen Temple reads it as the world telling the truth about desire: the water is real in the sense that the need is real; the lie is that need and presence are the same thing. A traveller who dies walking toward the lying water did not misread the land — they misread what the land owes them.
