The Asheni — Asheni

THE LORE · THE VALE

The Asheni

The grey-skinned, ember-eyed old blood of the Vale and the ash — kin to the fallen Vallen Imperium and to the wandering Bonesung clans. The Sundering is written into them: ash in the skin, the wound in the marrow.

The Asheni were in the Vale before House Vandahl put names to the holds, and they carry their ancestors as readily as they bury them. Their skin is the grey of cooled ash and their eyes hold an ember-red light; fire and ash that would blister a settler only warm them. Settled Asheni keep the temples, the forges, and the long family grudges of the great Houses; the wandering clans — the Bonesung — keep the older ancestor-rites out on the open ash and call the settled ones soft. Both trace their blood to the Imperium that broke at Caer Vallen, and both feel the Sundering's weight more plainly than any settler ever will. Proud, ceremonious, and slow to trust outland faces.

WORLDVIEW

The ancestors are present, not past, and the old blood endures the wound it was born into; a House is its lineage, its forge-rights, and its grudges kept clean across generations. The settled keep temples, forges, and house-feuds while the wandering keep the open-ash rites, and each is sure the other has forgotten how to be Asheni.

TEMPERAMENT

Formal, ancestor-minded, proud, long-grudged.

voice{"register":"Old-blooded and formal; ancestor-minded, measured, speaks of what was.","likes":["myth","land","law","power"],"opener":"Sit. I will tell you what is known.","dismiss":"The old blood remembers more than it says. Want sermons? Ask the temple."}
social_structure{"unit":"The great house — a multi-generational kinship compound, not individual households","communal_scale":"Communal within the house lineage; entirely non-communal across house lines. The loyalty is intensely tight inside and absent outside. A rival house's problems are not your problems — they may be your opportunity.","dwelling_form":"A great house is a compound: multiple generations under one roof or in attached structures around the shared forge-hearth. The house fire is the house's identity — it predates any current member and will outlast them. Moving into a separate individual dwelling is close to a statement of severance from the lineage.","ancestor_presence":"The dead are co-resident. Ancestor niches are in the walls; the ash-remnant of specific forebears rests in the fire-bowl beside the living. Multi-generational habitation is not a circumstance — it is the point. You live with your ancestors because they are still there.","individualism":"Low within the house; high between houses. An Asheni does not think in terms of personal autonomy from the lineage — the house's grudges are your grudges, the house's forge-rights are your rights, the house's honor is your honor. But the house does not share this with any other house. Asheni individualism expresses as house-competition, not personal independence.","bonesung_equivalent":"The clan travels and decides together; the ancestor fire travels with them. Same principle as the great house — kinship group as the total unit of loyalty — expressed in mobile form rather than fixed compound.","contrast_with_humans":"Humans in the Vale live in individual household units — nuclear families, rented rooms, people who move for work. To an Asheni, this reads as people who have no ancestors worth living with, which is close to their actual view of human rootlessness. A human who inherits nothing and owes nothing to the dead is, from an Asheni perspective, barely a person — a free agent in the world, which is not a compliment.","house_fire_rule":"The hearth is never allowed to go out. It belongs to the house as a continuous entity. An extinguished house fire is a house death — it means the lineage has ended or been shamed beyond recovery. Keeping the fire is keeping the house alive."}

documents

  • The Birth of the RacesThe Asheni emerged at Fire — the first people of solid form, the first fully material beings, born when Aether fully descended into the dual element of creation and destruction.

disputes

  • The Cult of the Living VallenThe Asheni dispute the Cult. The Bonesung clans name the Vyr's account false in their gravesongs; the settled houses maintain public compliance while privately rejecting it.

rival_of

  • The VyrThe deepest inter-racial rupture in the Vale. The Asheni know the Vyr shattered Vallen; the Vyr cannot admit it. The rivalry is asymmetric: one side has the correct account, the other has the institutional power.

contradicts

  • The Cult of the Living VallenThe Asheni Bonesung gravesongs directly contradict the Cult's founding claim: 'the pale ones sang the Forge-Singer into silence' is not compatible with 'the Forge-Singer became the silence.'

worships

  • The Ember-FaithThe Asheni keep the banked coal that outlives the fire as their own priestless theology.
