The Fire-Tales
The Vale's shared shelf of hero-stories — told over shared fires, never written down straight, and owned by everyone. Its heroes are not conquerors: they are the ones who went into the dark, or through the winter, or up past the last cairn, and came back — or didn't, but the road they opened stayed open. Every child knows a dozen; every teller changes them; the fire is always warmer when one ends.
Ask a Vale scholar for the old heroes and you get dynasties and generals — the Rampart Wars, the names cut over gates. Ask anyone else and you get the Fire-Tales, which are better. They are the stories that live at the shared fire and nowhere else: no canon, no priesthood, no two tellings alike, and everyone within earshot entitled to correct you wrong. What holds them together is not the facts but the shape. A Fire-Tale hero is never a king and rarely a soldier. They are the ones who went — into the barrow nobody would enter, over the pass in the killing winter, down the flooded stair — and the tale is honest about the cost, because the Vale would smell a lie: fingers get lost, friends do not all come home, and the dark is really dark. But the tale always buys something with it. The road is opened. The bread arrives. The thing in the deep place stays down one more lifetime. Fire-Tales end with the world a little more mended and the fire a little warmer, and a teller who ends one any other way will be handed the pot and told to stir instead. The great ones every child can name: Sera of the Last Loaf, who out-walked the Great Famine's worst winter with an oven's worth of bread on her back; Kalder Nine-Fingers, the Korl who went into more dead places than any living soul and came out of all of them but once; and Tarrow the Lantern, who is complicated, because the tellers cannot agree on whether he is a tale at all — seeing as he still turns up at fires and eats the teller's supper while they get him wrong. There are dozens more — the Vale does not run short of winters, or of people who walked into them — and every district swears its own local hero belongs on the shelf beside the great ones, and every district is right. What the tales are *for*, nobody says aloud, but everyone knows. The Lean Years grind. The dark past the firelight is not a story. The Fire-Tales are the Vale's answer to its own arithmetic: proof, told nightly, that someone has always gone out into it and come back, and that the going was worth it. Children fall asleep on them. Delve crews tell them the night before a deep door. And when a stranger at your fire turns out to know a strand of one you have never heard, that is the road's own way of saying you chose the right fire.
