THE LORE
The Elder Age
The long age before the Imperium, when the god Vallen walked unbroken and the Korl and Stoneborn quarried the Rampart's bones — the stratum the Imperium was built on top of and the reason the world feels older than its empire.
The Imperium was not the first thing here, only the loudest. Beneath its bronze roads and tithe-cities lies the Elder Age: the long quiet centuries when the Sworn Gods walked and answered, when the Korl held the high passes and the Stoneborn cut the Rampart open for the marrow-stone the Imperium would later mortar its walls with. The settled folk have almost no record of it — the Imperium wrote over what it conquered — but the deep-folk keep it in their grave-customs and their guild-oaths, and their stonework turns up under imperial foundations wherever a delve goes deep enough. Two things make the Elder Age matter to anyone digging today: its makings outlast the Imperium's, and it remembers the gods from before they stopped answering. To find an Elder thing in a barrow is to touch a layer the dead empire is only the lid on.
