Chapter 3
Canopy Lurk

A long-armed, leaf-coloured ambush predator of the Drook high canopy — drops onto the trail from the overhead cover and is gone before the body cools.
The Lurk earns its name by staying still so long that the birds settle on it. It is roughly the size of a crouching human, green-brown, and entirely committed to the idea that it does not exist until it has decided to. Trail-walkers in the Drook's high jungle learn to look up — but only after the first time they don't.
