Chapter 62
Pine Elk
also called boreal elk, high-country elk

A large, grey-coated elk of the boreal foothills that grazes the Hollow Vale's sheltered basin — prey for the cookpot, wary of the strange hum of the column-fields.
They move in small groups and avoid the column-field terraces entirely, preferring the hollow-vale grass and the tarn's margin. A stealth approach yields a clean kill; a botched one sends the herd over the ridge at a run. Raw elk meat is risky; the cookfire at Pinewatch or Greywater earns its keep.
