Carrion Beetle

A chitin-backed scavenger swarm of the red flats that strips a carcass — or a sleeper — to clean bone before the sun is high.

It is why the hold was emptied by night and stays empty. One beetle is a nuisance; the flats deal in hundreds. The Silt Hands' cellar-route runners sleep in shifts and keep a fire, and still come out short some mornings.
