Chapter 65
Spur Feral Dog

The guard-dogs of the Spur's abandoned steadings, gone feral since the silver failed and the families walked away — still territorial, still pack-hunting, and meaner for the hunger.
Every empty steading on the Spur left its dogs. Some starved; the rest adapted. They know the walls and the fold-lines of the empty ground the way their former owners did, and they defend it with the same territorial instinct, except there is nothing left to guard except the habit. They den in cellars and move in groups of three to five. The Foldfast Steading's pack is the largest on the Spur and has been eating the Broken Lances' rations.
